Causes and Effects of Therapeutic Interventions: a propensity-based approach or: ‘How can individual patient experiences of therapy outcomes help prevent harm to other patients'

September 12 th - 15 th 2019

Workshop direction: M. Lindquist, I.R. Edwards, R.L. Anjum, U. Moretti

Many have argued that the nearly exclusive reliance on statistical methods and population data cannot provide an optimal medical care for the individual. Frequencies of outcome, numbers needed to treat and statistical averages are important to quantify risk on the overall population level. However, what is crucial to know for the treated patient is the individual propensity to get a certain outcome. For this, we need to understand the causal mechanisms of the drug, the risk factors of the patient, the specific context of the patient and her story about the condition. However, how would a propensity-based medical care work in practice? This is a challenging question, which requires a multi-disciplinary effort, including basic scientists, epidemiologists, clinicians, pharmacists, decision-makers, manufacturers, patients and philosophers.

The aim of this meeting is to draft a trans-disciplinary approach to the following issues:
    • How should medical practice and research be organized to best harness useful, individual patient information to improve general medical knowledge?
    • Once available as general medical knowledge, how can the information gathered from individual patients with different propensities support treatment decisions for other individual patients.
